Some of the scenes (like the one from the police car or the one where he's dressed like a nurse) are absolutely beautiful. Apart from that, there's a big nothing. Christian Bale didn't seem to be trying too hard. As great as he is, useless philosophy dialogues can't be acted, especially when the "dilemmas" are identical to the ones in the first series. The excessive hoarseness transforms him from obscure and mysterious into tired and sad. When you see him flying and killing/saving five people at a time, but then about to die in an encounter with a rottweiler, you suddenly understand why the poor bastard lost the will to live. Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of the ugliest women i've ever seen on the big screen. You'd swear she is the reincarnation of the mummy from "tales from the crypt. If they had put all the males in the movie fall in love with a boot, it would have brought a lot more credibility and a much greater emotional impact on the audience than look of a senile old broad who always seems cramped because her morning enema hasn't kicked in yet transforms all the romantic scenes and the emotional preoccupations of the young female lawyer into an experience. The rest of the actors are mediocre, or just plain awful. But you have nothing to demand from them with such a script. The difference between The Dark Knight and other mainstream super-hero B movies is that instead of one bad movie, you get two, stuffed together, two and a half hours which could have easily been one and a quarter. It's a lot for the mere asking. And I'm not just talking about the so exaggerated action scenes : the huge truck that tips over because of a cable, the helicopter that falls down because of another cable, the bazooka fired from a 3 m distance, and last, but not least the overwhelming scene with Batman taking down 50 men using ropes and hooks, while gazing with white eyes around him in the building. Nor am I forgetting Morgan Freeman who can listen to 30 million telephone conversations in real time, destroying the entire system after he finishes because he can't bear the thought that it's "immoral. Even when you see Two-Face looking worse than the 90's version of The Terminator, you still think maybe something good is going to turn up in this movie. Although all this makes you want to leave the hall, these aren't the biggest problems of the film, because you're willing to accept the the Hollywood spirit "we spend 'till we don't have anything left" if the story stands on its own two feet. But the story seems to be crawling like a wounded animal, and the fact that it's two and a half hours long makes the agony seem to last forever. Your eyes hurt when you see all the nursery philosophies about justice and morality, supported by the stories of wise Alfred about Cesar and the outlaws of Birmany. You get tisks in your spleen when you see the woman-cop with the hospitalized mother, the martyr prisoners or the emblematic blond child who's about to die, but doesn't die and at the end thinks that Batman is good. When you realize that every ten minutes you'll be surprised by another twist in the story you start feeling a slight internal bleeding. And when you see that the witty plans of blowing up Gotham are still at the level of the well known 80's cartoons you can't handle the pressure anymore and the blood starts gushing out through your nose. At the end you can't help but wondering just how stoned the writers were when they came up with all thin nonsense and why you decided to waste your money on the ticket when you could have spent it on something better. Overall, the movie is neither dark, nor gritty, not even psychological. It's a great Heath Ledger, a hoarse Bale, a horrifying Maggie and a brass band of bad guys so well packed in a jar of pickles, that not even a fibster could breath. A movie sold thanks to an extraordinary man, who didn't live to see his outstanding performance. Unfortunately, the rest of the Hollywood stars, writers, producers and promoters didn't move at all. They probably just laughed their brains out when they saw the huge rate that this movie got on IMDb.

Close "Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families. " -Christopher Nolan.

Christopher Nolan ’s “The Dark Knight” is a haunted film that leaps beyond its origins and becomes an engrossing tragedy. It creates characters we come to care about. That’s because of the performances, because of the direction, because of the writing, and because of the superlative technical quality of the entire production. This film, and to a lesser degree “ Iron Man, ” redefine the possibilities of the “comic-book movie. ” “The Dark Knight” is not a simplistic tale of good and evil. Batman is good, yes, The Joker is evil, yes. But Batman poses a more complex puzzle than usual: The citizens of Gotham City are in an uproar, calling him a vigilante and blaming him for the deaths of policemen and others. And the Joker is more than a villain. He’s a Mephistopheles whose actions are fiendishly designed to pose moral dilemmas for his enemies. The key performance in the movie is by the late Heath Ledger, as the Joker. Will he become the first posthumous Oscar winner since Peter Finch? His Joker draws power from the actual inspiration of the character in the silent classic “ The Man Who Laughs ” (1928). His clown's makeup more sloppy than before, his cackle betraying deep wounds, he seeks revenge, he claims, for the horrible punishment his father exacted on him when he was a child. In one diabolical scheme near the end of the film, he invites two ferry-loads of passengers to blow up the other before they are blown up themselves. Throughout the film, he devises ingenious situations that force Batman ( Christian Bale), Commissioner Gordon ( Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent ( Aaron Eckhart) to make impossible ethical decisions. By the end, the whole moral foundation of the Batman legend is threatened. Because these actors and others are so powerful, and because the movie does not allow its spectacular special effects to upstage the humans, we’re surprised how deeply the drama affects us. Eckhart does an especially good job as Harvey Dent, whose character is transformed by a horrible fate into a bitter monster. It is customary in a comic book movie to maintain a certain knowing distance from the action, to view everything through a sophisticated screen. “The Dark Knight” slips around those defenses and engages us. Yes, the special effects are extraordinary. They focus on the expected explosions and catastrophes, and have some superb, elaborate chase scenes. The movie was shot on location in Chicago, but it avoids such familiar landmarks as Marina City, the Wrigley Building or the skyline. Chicagoans will recognize many places, notably La Salle Street and Lower Wacker Drive, but director Nolan is not making a travelogue. He presents the city as a wilderness of skyscrapers, and a key sequence is set in the still-uncompleted Trump Tower. Through these heights, the Batman moves at the end of strong wires, or sometimes actually flies, using his cape as a parasail. The plot involves nothing more or less than the Joker’s attempts to humiliate the forces for good and expose Batman’ secret identity, showing him to be a poser and a fraud. He includes Gordon and Dent on his target list, and contrives cruel tricks to play with the fact that Bruce Wayne once loved, and Harvey Dent now loves, Assistant D. A. Rachel Dawes ( Maggie Gyllenhaal). The tricks are more cruel than he realizes, because the Joker doesn’t know Batman’s identity. Heath Ledger has a good deal of dialogue in the movie, and a lot of it isn’t the usual jabs and jests we’re familiar with: It’s psychologically more complex, outlining the dilemmas he has constructed, and explaining his reasons for them. The screenplay by Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan (who first worked together on “ Memento ”) has more depth and poetry than we might have expected. Two of the supporting characters are crucial to the action, and are played effortlessly by the great actors Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Freeman, as the scientific genius Lucius Fox, is in charge of Bruce Wayne’s underground headquarters, and makes an ethical objection to a method of eavesdropping on all of the citizens of Gotham City. His stand has current political implicstions. Caine is the faithful butler Alfred, who understands Wayne better than anybody, and makes a decision about a crucial letter. Nolan also directed the previous, and excellent, “ Batman Begins ” (2005), which went into greater detail than ever before about Bruce Wayne’s origins and the reasons for his compulsions. Now it is the Joker’s turn, although his past is handled entirely with dialogue, not flashbacks. There are no references to Batman’s childhood, but we certainly remember it, and we realize that this conflict is between two adults who were twisted by childhood cruelty — one compensating by trying to do good, the other by trying to do evil. Perhaps they instinctively understand that themselves. Something fundamental seems to be happening in the upper realms of the comic-book movie. “Spider-Man II” (2004) may have defined the high point of the traditional film based on comic-book heroes. A movie like the new “Hellboy II” allows its director free rein for his fantastical visions. But now “Iron Man” and even more so “The Dark Knight” move the genre into deeper waters. They realize, as some comic-book readers instinctively do, that these stories touch on deep fears, traumas, fantasies and hopes. And the Batman legend, with its origins in film noir, is the most fruitful one for exploration. In his two Batman movies, Nolan has freed the character to be a canvas for a broader scope of human emotion. For Bruce Wayne is a deeply troubled man, let there be no doubt, and if ever in exile from his heroic role, it would not surprise me what he finds himself capable of doing. Roger Ebert Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. The Dark Knight (2008) Rated PG-13 for for intense sequences of violence and some menace 152 minutes 2 days ago 3 days ago.

It's hard to believe it's been 12 years since Christian Bale swooped down over the Gotham City skyline and took on the frightening force of Heath Ledger's Joker. While most of us have seen brooding Bale's growl and watched Ledger's Oscar -winning performance a million times, here are 11 things you never knew about The Dark Knight. Cesar Romero's callback Warner Bros. Watch Now The Dark Knight (2008) The Dark Knight kicked things off in style with its clown bank heist and the introduction of the Joker. As the Clown Prince of Crime hid behind a mask and offed various grunts, his costume was a nod to Cesar Romero – the original Joker in the Adam West era. The 1966 episode 'The Joker Is Wild! ' was Joker's debut and featured him dressed as classic clown Pagliacci to spring a trap on the Dynamic Duo at the Gotham City Opera. Ledger's mask is identical to the one worn by Romero. The pencil stunt was done without CGI This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. It turns out various stunts with Batmobiles and flipping trucks weren't the most dangerous for The Dark Knight. Joker's iconic pencil trick could have cost one star his life. Actor Charles Jarman told Movieweb how it was performed without the use of CGI. "I remember Christopher Nolan saying to me, Look, we're going to do a couple of shots where you need to be able to take that pencil away, " said Jarman. "We did a couple of half-speed rehearsals just to get the hand action of my right hand sweeping across, taking the pencil as my body was going down, and my head striking the blank surface. It was a little hairy, because the pencil's stuck in the table. If, for some reason, I didn't get my hand in time, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Well, possibly through a Ouija board. " Setting the scene for Catwoman Even though Anne Hathaway didn't join the franchise as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, until 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan teased her introduction in The Dark Knight. During a showdown with Scarecrow's goons, Bruce was attacked by a dog and had to upgrade his suit. When he asked Lucius Fox whether his new wardrobe would protect him against dogs, Morgan Freeman's character said, "Should do fine against cats". A bunch of Marvel stars were considered to play Harvey Dent Aaron Eckhart wasn't the only famous face tipped to flip a coin as Two-Face thanks to a cornucopia of Marvel stars also circling the role. X-Men favourites Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber were considered for Dent, while Mark Ruffalo was also thrown into the ring. In a pre- Marvel Cinematic Universe world, Ruffalo playing Dent would've been a precursor to him taking over from Edward Norton to play Hulk in The Avengers. Matt Damon's Thor: Ragnarok cameo means he isn't a huge part of the MCU, however, the Bourne lead got closer than most to playing Two-Face. Damon told MTV he had to pass on playing Two-Face due to scheduling conflicts. Don't worry though, he agreed Eckhart was the right man for the job. The Italian Connection Although Jack Nicholson was reportedly vexed that he wasn't asked back for The Dark Knight, there was some part of Batman '89 that returned for the Nolanverse. Aside from Ledger saying he took some influence from Nicholson's Joker, the legacy continued in another way. Italian actor Giancarlo Giannini dubbed Nicholson's lines for Burton's movie, and his son Adriano Giannini provided Ledger's Italian dub for The Dark Knight. Talk about keeping it in the family. Caine fluffs his lines Heath Ledger's performance was so terrifying, it even threw Michael Caine off his game. Although the veteran actor has seen plenty of things in his career, he'd never witnessed anything quite like Ledger's Joker. While promoting the movie Sleuth, Caine explained how Ledger caused him to fluff his lines. "On the first rehearsal, I've never seen him. He has like seven dwarfs with him, like Snow White, only it's not like that, " said Caine. "When the bloody door opened on that lift, he came tearing out. I forgot every line. Terrifying. " Turkey sued the movie Batman, Turkey Anadolu Agency Getty Images Given that Batman has been around since 1939, it's a strange coincidence that it took the box office success of The Dark Knight to spurt a Turkish province called Batman to have a problem with the Caped Crusader. With The Dark Knight preparing for its DVD release, Mayor Hüseyin Kalkan announced that he was going to sue Nolan and Warner Bros. for copyright infringement. Kalkan's case claimed The Dark Knight was linked to a high female suicide rate in Batman and a spate of unsolved murders. Unsurprisingly, Kalkan didn't win this one. Getting the part "licked" Part of the Joker's terror was the simplicity of his design. Much like the rest of Nolan's trilogy, the big bad of The Dark Knight was a grounded villain you could easily come across in a gloomy alley. When it comes to Joker's signature scars and tic of licking his lips, it was because his prosthetics were coming loose. The documentary I Am Heath Ledger explained how the actor has to keep his lips wet to stop the prosthetics from cracking. It eventually evolved to become part of Joker's manic personality. Behind the Batpod Even the classic Batmobile got an overhaul in Nolan's trilogy. As well as the tank-like Batmobile, The Dark Knight introduced the nippy Bat-Pod. The speed machine looks like it would've been a lot of fun to ride, meaning Bale happily volunteered to give it a spin. Sadly, he wasn't allowed to get behind the controls. Speaking to GQ, Batman himself revealed: "There are other motorbikes in the film that I got to burn about on, but not the Bat-Pod – it was deemed too dangerous; they needed me in one piece to finish the damn movie. " Joker's sweet nod to Matilda One of the most iconic scenes in the entire movie was Joker's assault on Gotham General Hospital. As well as the visually striking moment Joker met the new-and-improved Two-Face, there was a costume change when Ledger stalked the halls as a nurse. Looking a little closer, Joker's nurse's name tag (above the Harvey Dent sticker) says Matilda. More than just a random name plucked from a book, Matilda is the name of Ledger and Michelle Williams' daughter in real life. Joker (2019) Warner Bros/DC Amazon £13. 99 Batman 1989 Pop!
